Hello : Is there anyone out there who has birdNET working successfully in the south london area ?
Specifically if you go menu explore your area > Does it bring up any kind of listing at all ?
Tried and tried but cant even get close to a single robin. Explore your area only return sorry not available message ?
Just want to know if its me or some general lack of mapping to UK yet ?

On samsung galaxy core . Records fine. Shows GPS but comes with really wild shots at even just a single robin next to me,

Grateful to know if its just me . Contacted Cornell univ but nothing yet. Ms M

I thought birdnet had ceased trading as an information service and were only concentrating on optic sales (albeit from the house in Buxton rather than the shop). Still great value, I suspec.

Unless, of course, someone is using their name !

ooh cross purposes mike. This is an app. Hear a bird singing the app tells you what it is. or best guess. Be wonderful to have . Guys in USA cornell univ ( not Buxton optics) Alas I'm thinking they haven yet mapped out to south london. Just keep my fingers crossed may happen soon.

ciao Sq

Oh, thank you.
Cornell’sElton App. is pretty good but I hadn’t heard of an App. which was any good for bird song.

Does it work ?
Do you use your phone’s microphone or a plug in directional microphone ?

cheers

The BirdNET app does work, although it is still in the development stages. I use my the built in microphone from my phone. As an added bonus, you get a real-time sonogram of what you are hearing.

They also have an online version. You can learn more about it here.
You can upload audio files you wish to analyze here.
With the online version you can see the different species as the recording plays.

guys : my conclusion is not yet ready for UK . The test I use is to select " explore your area form the menu" Result , and now I have tried it with others , is " no data for your area" So whilst it will pick up "european robin" from time to time it may also give a high probability it is something we dont know in these parts. Which is a great pity for us newbies trying to get the know the common ones. I heard its co-ordinating with "Ebird" An app encouraging folks to record a song. identify the bird and send it in for global mapping. . So I'm game to support that as best I can.
I use built in mic , game to try anything else, BUT seems to me if it can list common birds on your area , even a Robin, Then we can only wait for Cornel to map us. Grateful to know any advance on this

ciao MsM

you're kidding me right? I get close to 20 different birds every hour I record! it's absolutely incredible!

I HAVE A QUESTION!!! Does birdnet lie a lot? I'm getting some incredible birds, but I do live right opposite a nature reserve. So out of my skylight, can capture 20 bird sounds in the morning, very early. Then at dusk, another 15/20. Is she telling lies to me though?

or, possibly a complete farse? Not sure. I don't really know how you actually get to see real-live birds. Although I did get some epic footage of a Jay last weekend. I'm dying to know . . . about one bird I've picked up 3 times now . . . that my stepdad says is absurd. TWO actually!

I find it's reasonably good if you can point the microphone at the bird and there's little background noise. If you've got multiple birds calling, you only get a short recording, or if there's other background noise it can easily get confused.

No, its reasonably accurate - I think in the original paper they claimed it was right 80% of the time. It does misreport sometimes, I find it useful to always take two recordings of each call and make sure it gives the same species both times. There are some similar species which it gets muddled up with eg Dunnock/Kingfisher, Redstart/Chiffchaff. If you use it for a while you get used to them.
