Birding.....Guisborough, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay (1 Viewer)

Can anyone tell me what birding to expect in Guisborough, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire Moors area please? I have never visited these places but may be doing during August. Are there any other areas near by that I mustn't miss? I think Countryfile mentioned Flamborough Head recently - would Puffins be likely? Red Kites on moors?? Any info welcome. Many thanks.

You could have a look at Scaling Dam about 5 miles out of Whitby, there are Crossbills in the trees near the car park and there is also a hide overlooking the water which gets a good variety.

Scaling Dam west end by the yacht club is worth checking out for the nature reserve and hide. Usually there's an Osprey around over summer apart from the waders. Summer Crossbills are usually in the car park, though the road from Castleton to Lockwood Beck is just as good by the camp site. Lockwood Beck is a fishery but you can wander round. They have bird feeders.

Anywhere on the Moor tops you should come across Grouse and no end of Pheasant and Grey Partridge in the grassy fields - the Whitby to Guisborough road is as good as anywhere.

Ring Ouzel breed on the Moors as well - the west edge is usually good for them - the road from Osmotherly to Hawnby near Black Hambledon hill is noted for them - also Stonechat and chance of Whinchat here.

Saltburn Woods can be quite productive as well for woodland species. I usually park at Sands End which is quite scenic and walk up the valley bottom - just so as I don't have to walk up the hill ;) The car park is beside Salburn pier as well.

Also in the northern area there's South Gare pier access is from Redcar - well worth a visit any time of the year.

By Guisborough there's Hutton Village with some pleasant forest walks. Also Nightjar - but it's a stiff late evening walk up to where they are.

Red Kites you'll struggle for. Harewood House are the nearest ones - a good distance away, but birds have been known to roam over the Moors.

There's a raptor view point in Dalby Forest - but viewing isn't as good as it was due to the height of the trees now.

Out of all the places I'd say Bempton Cliffs for the Gannets and Puffins and the rest is a must. Flamborough Head can be just as good for Puffins - sometimes they're on the cliff edge just a few feet away.

There are a couple of site descriptions on the Teesmouth Bird Club link in my signature below - but not very detailed.

Now if it was the north side of the River Tees you were visiting - there's no end of locations to visit!

Wykeham Forest is good for Tree Pipit (from the raptor watch point is a good place), also Crossbill and Nightjar. There is also a chance of Honey Buzzard and Goshawk from the watch point.
The feeders at Forge Valley are worth a quick visit if passing. Marsh Tit is very regular.
As said above, Bempton RSPB and/or Flamborough Head are a must for seabirds. Red Kites are now breeding in the Wolds and can often be seen around North Cave (about 45 mins from Bridlington).

Thanks to everyone for great info. Looking forward to my visit. Hotel booking unfortunately appears to have fallen through but I will still get there by hook or by crook!

Managed to book my hotel at last but not until 21st August. What will I miss out on leaving it this late?

I've never been to Bempton that late in the breeding season so I don't know how many birds will still be present. Many cliff nesters once fledged head out to sea.

In terms of waders and other coastal birds it's a better time to visit. In mid-late August South Gare beach attracts literally thousands of post breeding Terns - including quite a few Roseate. The Terns are a magnet for Skuas - a marvellous sight to watch as they chase the Terns around the skies trying to rob them of food. In addition many post breeding waders start building up numbers along the coast and on water bodies like Scaling Dam. It's one of the best times of year to come across scarce Sandpipers - Wood-, Green-, Spotted- and Curlew Sandpipers are all regulars this time of year. Shearwaters are regular as well.

Late August is also the time we get influxes of warblers - 20th-22nd August are good dates for Barred Warbler and Greenish Warbler and Shrikes - one loation at South Gare is actually caled 'Shrike bushes' as it's such a good spot for them most (but not last) year(s). Saltburn Woods used to be a pretty good migrant hotspot for arriving birds.

Check out the sightings on Teesmouth Bird Club - August 2006 sightings for August last year - another European Roller would be very nice to see ;)

Don't worry there'll be plenty to see - probably far more than on a July visit!

Amelia If you have trouble with hotels in Whitby try The Royal run by Shearings/Wallace Arnold they do "self drive" options there and it is looks right over the harbour and has a lovely view of the ruined abbey too, you can get information from their brochure

Superb info again Ian - thank you. Much appreciated. Can't wait for my trip now- you've really whetted my appetite!

Thanks also to Edward for suggestion re The Royal. We have actually managed to get into our first choice hotel a little way inland on a cheapy Tesco Clubcard break (more money for me to spend on birding!) so I'm chuffed to bits. Will be a shame not to see Puffin but plenty to test my id skills (oh dear!) Looking forward to getting stuck into digiscoping with my Nikon ED50 on the trip.

Kind regards
