Best cheap quiet waterproof jacket? (2 Viewers)

I want a new jacket, ideally under £100 that is rustle free, waterproof and breathable. Is this possible? If not I'll just carry on pretending my Berghaus Goretex is still waterproof and crackling my way through forest and marsh...

I looked the other day at a Deerhunter Ram jacket in realtree camo(they also do it in Green/olive) in the outdoor shop in Holt Norfolk i think its called Morston country persuits or Morston somthing and considered it excellent value and very good quality it was a round a £110 maybe less for cash. This was the best price i could find including the internet. Some places were doing this jacket for £150.Let us know how you get on.

I bought a regatta waterproof and breathable jacket last October for £30. I thought that it would do for me to go out and walk the dog in. It has proved to be at least as effective as my berghaus goretex and whilst not completely rustle free it is quieter once on than the berghaus.

A little more money, but

Hi Sean,
I know its a bit over your budget at £125, but I set out looking for the same a couple of years ago and ended up with Country Innovation ,Innovation 7 jacket, made in Scotland by the people who make seam taping machines and stuff. Not as silent as cotton, but very supple and quiet - much better than my previous Gore-Tex.

Same spec as CI £300 job re pockets and weatherproofing etc., but cheaper and lighter. Been thru deluges, wind etc and its good. Light-ish in weight too. no signs of deterioration after 2 years regular wear. All round excellent value to my mind.
Give it a look before deciding.

Some RSPB's keep in stock
Edit - Whoops, sorry, Just checked CI site and its £150 now! Still good value at the price.
Regards, Paul

If ever you go to Sri Lanka it is worth visiting the market in Nuwara Eliya; there you can buy Goretex jackets for about £12, same as what the Sri Lankan factories make and export to be sold at £100+

cheap jacket

british army surplus £15 near new condition.wash with £5 TX wash to enhance waterproofing.rustle free waterproof and got me within 10 feet of a treecreaper to video with camcorder until i realised it wont focus that close on maximum zoom.Goretex trousers lightweight £20.

Deerthunter jackets are in my opinion about the best for price and being ultra quiet. look at the Montana ( £110 to £150 - at game fairs.) with detatchable fleese included. We use and abuse them and they are very good indeed. The realtree hardwood pattern is most usefull and used with either the cotton matching trousers at about £30, or the breathable waterproof trousers at about £65 are a great combination - you only get what you pay for, keep well clear of the very cheap so called breathables.

I'm with MarkP - cheap and effective.

When wearing DPM was part of my job, although we were issued with Goretex jackets they were so noisy that on manouvers we would put a standard smock OVER the goretex as a sacrificial wet layer to soundproof but more often than not we just got wet & put up with it.

When out last November at the Exe estuary with fellow bird club members in full deluge even the Country Innovation and Goretex boys got a soaking.

The Gore-tex (or eVent for that matter) membrane isn't that noisy - it's the face fabric which tends to effect how noisy the gament is. Compare the Berghaus Storm jacket to the Cornice and you'll see the Storm is dramatically quieter, yet both are standard 2lyr Gore-Tex.

Paramo 'Waterproofs' are too warm for me to wear in comfort for most of the year, but they are fairly quiet.

Personally in the Summer I tend to avoid wearing a waterproof most of the time, and just carry a cheap Craghoppers Pakka for when it does chuck it down. A proofed windshirt (I'm impressed so far with the Paramo Fuera) copes with moderate showers and is far more breathable.

I second Jeremy's suggestion of the Regatta Waxbill II, I bought mine on Sunday from Oswald Bailey in the Pallasades Shopping Centre, Birmingham, it cost £54.95 (£10 off their usual price in their centenary sale, but £5 more than their online price).

I was looking for a good quality breathable jacket at a sensible price, that looked good and felt good, and preferably not in bright colours. The Army Green Waxbill II in Isotex certainly fit the bill, I wore it out on a walk today and was very impressed. This is a seriously nice jacket at a very sensible price.

Clearly you can pick these up cheaper online but I now prefer to try a jacket on before I buy it to make sure it fits right, feels good and all the zips etc are in the right place. So far, the Waxbill II gets my recommendation :O)

Details here on Regatta's website, but their photo does not actually show Army Green, which in fact is a nice bog-standard military style olive green.

and on Oswald Baileys' site:

Incidentally, I wore a white short-sleeved England football shirt under the jacket, I find these are great as they are very breathable and comfortable, and currently being sold off by Sports World for £11.99 in stores (reduced from £39.99 RRP, but they are charging £19.99 online!):

Glad you like the coat, Cap`n Jack. Wish the English lads all the best in the world cup, but think I`ll skip wearing the England shirt. I`d run the risk of being torn to pieces, as the native Celts (read: dim-witted Anglophobes) are none-too-friendly round here!

I know what you mean Jeremy :eek!:

Perhaps a Welsh rugby shirt might do better? B :)

And cheap? Shurely shome mishtake ...

The answer will lie in army surplus and patient shopping around ... I got a peachcloth shooting jacket online the other day (retails about the same as a paramo jacket) for 20 odd quid, but sadly their idea of XXL wasn't mine ... nice present for someone though ... I have got some max4 camo stuff that fits for 30 quid online, yet could have spent 220 on it ... Paramo is probably very good because, like Zeiss scopes, you very very seldom see any second-hand or discounted. But you will find other stuff.

It's quite quiet but not as quiet as my Mossy Oak woodland hunting camo suit which I got off eBay.

A good reason to check this kind of thing out personally in the shop of course.
