Attracting Juncos? (1 Viewer)

Last year I had a small hopper feeder filled with millet. This summer I replaced it with The Effortless Bird Feeder (tube feeder) which has a large platform. I fill it with my own mix of safflower, black oil sunflower, and striped sunflower. (I also have a separate suet, peanut, and thistle feeder).

During the winter last year, we had a lot of Juncos that fed from the spilled millet. Sometimes they would fly up to the feeder. I love Juncos, and worry that because I have a tray that catches the seed, and no longer use millet (trying to cut down on the sparrow visits) that I will not attract them this year. A ground feeder is out of the question because of four outdoor cats across the street.

Will they still come with the type of feeder and seed mix I am using?

Yes juncos like millet, but they seem content here in Iowa to eat spilled sunflower seed. From my experience, all you need to feed is striped sunflower seed. Remember these "seed mixes" are just a marketing ploy to get people to think that if you buy the "cardinal mix" you will be guaranteed to get cardinals, but the reality is that most common feeder birds in the United States will come for two feeder items: suet and striped sunflower seed. The other mixes are a waste of money.
