Anybody know anything about LIMPKINS? (3 Viewers)

My house backs up to a bird sanctuary which is nice BUT every March through April one or more LIMPKINS scream/squawk bloody murder all night long. One of the bird links describes the whaling of a limpkin as sounding like 'someone being strangled to death'.....short of a hunting excursion, how does one suggest that this homely creature go elsewhere?

H iSquaky,

Welcome to Birdforum.

Not the best way to endear yourself to us stating about shooting them..yes it may be in jest. After all the Birds were probably living their before you.

You mentioned the word sanctuary. That means the birds are welcome there. What do you want to live in Florida for anyway? Just move it will be easier in the long run. Dont get Limpkins in Alaska.

hello, welcome to bird forum!

Surely I jested on the hunting. I love birds but this guy keeps coming back every year trying to drive me nuts. Thanks to the net I found out what kind of bird it was. Once in awhile he walks on the bank of the canal behind my house. If he squawks all night I wondered how he could be awake during the day. I yelled at him waving my arms to shoo him away and the brave little dude started walking toward me....I got the impression that during mating season he is afraid of no one or no thing especially me....the only solution to my problem is leaving the TV on all night with windows closed.....

Hi Squaky and welcome to BirdForum from those of us on staff here.

Hopefully, when the nesting season is over with, things will quiet down for you.

Welcome! Yep, it's SPRING and mating season all over around FL. Watch the birds all around you. It may be annoying but it's also the beauty of nature. They will quiet down soon. Marilyn

I'm having the same problem.
I live in South Florida and enjoy having the birds all year around.
This guy(limpkin) is driving us insane.Nobody can sleep and the sound is excrutiating.
It sounds that the bird is hurting or in pain.
My hubby just called and said that the bird has a mate.
Do they make the noise to atract a female?
I'm glad I found this forum.

I also see them all year around but they just make the noise
around this time.
Now he has a mate. We are observing. My hubby is at home working
and was wathing them. It is very hard to find info on limpkins.
I 'google' but didn't find much about theirs habits .
Maria

Limpkins are a regular nuisance in my back yard every Spring! Their mating calls last all night, are relentless and sound like they're being dismembered each and every minute. I always hope the invasive lizard population will eventually find the nests and eggs and start to turn the tables but so far the Limpkins are staying strong. I invested in a quality package of soft ear plugs to get my sleep groove back, it's a never ending drama here in The Banana Republic with something..usually nature or the corrupt politicians or the Police State we now live in.
