Aldi spotting scope (1 Viewer)

I missed out on one last time around (2007), and was surprised to see them in stock again when we popped in today. Great buy at just £25, so I bought one for my dad too. I haven't noticed any brown ring in the image, with or without the sun shade out, but viewing conditions were generally good today. I reckon it's at least on par with other scopes under £150.

Aldi Scope

The good news: Aldi in Loughborough have plenty.

The bad news: the one I got today - in a sealed box, etc - is fuzzy at all distances (and zoom setting), even dead centre - rather disappointing. :-C

I'll have one more try, via a replacement, tomorrow (18 Feb).

Just got the Aldi catalogue for week beginning 14th February, and they're selling a "Spotting Scope" for 35.99 euro (in Ireland, that is).

Picked one up this morning - store still had about 20 in stock - PM me and I will sort out details with you.

I am in Kent until the weekend visiting the in-laws but have the scope with me.

I got the telescope from Karl a couple of days ago, and took it out seriously for the first time yesterday morning. A write-up, and some "digiscoped" pictures of dubious quality, can be found here.

Thanks to Karl for his help and to Sancho for the original tip-off,

Tom

Anyone seen these scopes knocking about again? Friend of mine got one a couple of months ago, used it in Majorca and dropped it down a ravine!! Disposable scopes at £25!! He now wants a replacement though............

Thanks Nev - did that, but nothing yet.
However.....!! Just been down to Costco,Derby on a tip off - they have some "Meade spotting scopes" in, 20-60x zoom, and they are ideal for the boot etc as only £35 + vat!! It comes in a solid metal case (camera style), stay on case, carry cover and even a crappy tripod! I will let the kids loose with this one, but also use it abroad (so light!) and sling it in the car boot. At that money it doesnt matter what happens to it! Field of view isnt great but at that price its a steal! I am told they are a USA brand, and having tested it tonight, it looks well worth the money. My mate has the Aldi one so hope to test side by side. Costco is a warehouse by the way for those that dont use one, and membership is required. But I am sure there is someone out there who can help if you dont have a card etc! Dan.

Just one of those Meade Scopes
from Costco myself today,
at £35.21p it's a steal.

As you say

camera style carry case
2 'soft' carry covers
lens cloth
tripod
Even the lens cap has a small compass built in ;)

Armoured
Waterproof
Coated Lens
20x60 zoom,
oh and you can buy them on e-bay about £60/£70 inc p&p :eek!:

Glad you liked it.................used mine this morning on the local patch after school run...........the tripod is ok when positioned on the car boot!! bit small for anything else!!

Spotting scope reduced to £20 to "clear stocks" in Heanor, Derbyshire, from 9am this morning. About 15 left there. I believe reduction is nationwide.

Is the zoom eyepiece on this scope glued or screwed in place? Don't ruin your scope trying but, I ask because if it was 'screwable off' it would be interesting to try a wide-angle eyepiece instead....

Steve

Welded. nice one! The eyepiece is actually screwed and glued, and screws on/off quite easily after initial removal, without ruining the tight fit......that's if you have the nerves to do it!

Scope optical quality is a bit naff, though. Focus knob developed considerable play on the first one I had, so returned it(Aldi very amenable), and second was 'fairish'.

Its good as a starter/second scope as prev said, optics aint excellent but for £23.00 im well chuffed until i can afford something better
