M. Savés's occupation having taken him through most parts of the island, he has had unrivalled oppertunities of cpllecting, but, has not retained many of his specimens, and many have suffered from the destructive agents of a tropical climate.

This seems to be "the" reference about him :

I only find this online, unfortunately, in snippet view in Google Books. (Persée has scans of quite a few issues of this journal, but not this one.)

On la retrouve inscrite à l’entrée numéro 45 (pour l’année 1893) du Catalogue de vente des Frères Savès (Répertoire de la collection ethnographique, s.d. : 41) : « Spécimen de pirogue double » dans la liste des objets de Nouvelle-Calédonie, vendu au prix de « 40 f ». Les frères Alexis et Théophile Savès, neveux de Benjamin Balansa, botaniste en Nouvelle-Calédonie et aux îles Loyauté de 1868 à 1872, partirent chacun leur tour faire de la « prospection et du négoce, non seulement en Nouvelle-Calédonie, mais aussi dans les autres îles du Pacifique » (Astre, 1962 : 109). Installés comme marchands à Toulouse, ils firent commerce d’objets ethnographiques (Laroche, 1953 : 307-308 ; Bonvin et al., 2021 : 49-60).
