Returning to the original topic: does Common Chaffinch migrate across the Mediterranean or is a Chaffinch in North Africa automatically an African C? The presence of Chaffinch on Malta and other small islands between Italy and Tunisia makes me suspicious.

Yep, decent numbers overwinter in North Africa.

Are any of the migrating populations a similar colour to North African (sub)species. They’re pretty distinctive aren’t they?

European populations are all very similar looking. Even recognised subspecies like the British/Irish ones and Sardinian ones. So there is no risk of confusion from that perspective.
