10D Image Sensor cleaning (1 Viewer)

Can anyone recommend an easy method of cleaning the image sensor on the 10D?

Canon suggests using a blower but not a blower-brush as it could scratch the sensor surface.

I have tried this method and seemed to have put more dust specks on the sensor than there were before I started!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sandpiper.

There is an article on Luminous Landscape by a pro-photographer. I can't vouch for the quality of the information, though Michael Reichmann is very knowledgeable. Also try www.photo.net.

I use one of the rubber ENEMA BULBS as recommended by the repair guy at Canon - it holds about 150cc of air and has a nozzle about 3-4 inches long. It gives a good blow when you squeeze it and does not do any damage and seems very effective. Never touch or try to wipe your sensor with a brush or bud - you will damage it. If the blower does not remove all the dust rather take it to your Canon Service centre.

The fewer lens changes the less dust there will be.

Looks to me that you really need to know what you are doing to fiddle like this. Maybe its for the Pros but I wont risk it - call me chicken!

Surely it's time for the camera manufacturers to give us cleaning kits which they guarantee will work and not do damage. Why must we buy 3rd party kits which the manufactures will blame if anything goes wrong.

Canon, Nikon and the rest - GET YOUR FINGERS OUT and support your clients.

IIRC The new Olympus DSLR has an ultra-sonic mechanism that automatically cleans the CCD. The dust falls off and settles on some sticky pads. When the camera is serviced the pads are replaced.

Is dust really such an issue?

Hi

Just to add my twopence worth I have only ever had the sensor on my 10D cleaned once, that was when it went for a minor repair with Canon. To date the camera has taken c8500 shots & touch wood I don`t seem to suffer with specks of dust showing up in images.I think what helps a lot is the fact the lense on my camera is left mounted 95% of the time if I have to fit a tc to the lense then I either do it at home or make sure the windows are shut in the car.

Regards Steve.

Seeing as no one else has said this I will. When using a blower to blow the dust of hold the camera upside down so that the dust has a chance to fall out of the camera otherwise you are just blowing the dust into the camera body where it will find it's way back to the sensor my twobobs worth.

I've been using the Copper Hill technique for over a year. If you do exactly what he says and you have a steady hand, it's really quite straight forward. It's worth reading every single page and don't cut any corners on the cleaning materials.
