This bird has been at the top of my "Wish" list for photos. Yesterday, a cold and windy afternoon, I finally came across this bird only half way up a tree instead of at the very top! One of these days, maybe I will find one at the base of a tree and in a more open place with lots more light...

    Pileated Woodpecker in Flight

Finally got some usable pics of Pileateds. I have only seen them before 5 times and only one of those times was for more than a few seconds. THis guy was being very bold and I got to watch for several minutes as he flew from one totally exposed tree to another in an open area. Plus - he was...

    Pileated Woodpecker

Yesterday at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary was a woodpeckers day, I take picture of different woodpeckers but this Pileated Woodpecker was the best of the day, beautifull bird that flew really close to me and let me take at least two decent shots.

I managed to sneak up on this guy and take a few shots. The Pileated Woodpeckers that I have come across are usually very shy and indeed the second this guy caught wind of me he took off.

This group is a continuation from the last 3 uploaded. I managed to get around 80 shots as there were at least 8 in that small area and many shots as close as 6-7 feet.

Another shot, this time of the female, of North America's 2nd largest woodpecker. She also is working an old growth bald cypress at Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp.

I'm very happy to say, this is once again the second largest woodpecker in North America. This male was working an old growth bald cypress at Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp.

I had forgotten to turn on the camera stabilizer when I spotted the bird high in a bare pine 2 or 300 feet away . So this is max zoom (420mm) x1.7 converter hand held. Taken while visiting a son in Florida.
