Short-eared Owl

Even non-stop rain days can provide good wildlife observations. Today at La Janda, we enjoyed for a long time of this Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) while it was in search of small rodents.

Bare-shanked Screech Owl

The Bare-shanked Screech Owl is a common owl in highland habitats of Costa Rica and western Panama. It seems to be most common at elevations of 2,000 plus meters. This bird treated us to prolonged, fantastic views as 4 or 5 others called near and far.

Birds of Winter

Its hard not to love spring/summer with all its variety. Still there are times when my mind wanders back to the birds of winter. The Snowy Owl is one of our winter birds.

Here's Looking At You....Snowy Owl

This Snowy Owl seems to be looking straight at us. I kind of felt like a mouse for a moment. He was actually looking at some crows that were flying directly in back of me while I was making this image. The last of these guys are now slowly heading back to their arctic homeland.

Snowy At First Light.

I waited in the darkness for the mornings first light. It arrived and painted this white Snowy Owl the color of pink. The owl preened and prepared its feathers for a breakfast flight.
