    swan Family

this is the last one from last week yep it the mute swan family they were still altogether on the River Freshney looking to be getting ready to depart for the winter grounds as they kept all taking to the air flying round and going high up before landing and then taking off again.

    Possibly orphans

Our evening excursion that day was out to a lake off an even smaller channel nearby. One sad thing we saw there was a dead swan. By the way it was lying in the water, it looked like it might have gotten tangled in a fishnet and drowned. Just outside the mouth of the lake we saw these five...

  10. Four out of dozens

    Four out of dozens

I counted 27 Mute Swans in one visual swipe of the lake, but there were more out of view - on nests, in the reeds, in little coves out of sight, behind an island here and there. So I don't know how many dozens there are at this lake in all, but certainly more than two. We don't get them up where...
  11. Eight in the wake

    Eight in the wake

As I said ... the other swans had already hatched their young. This happy family had eight little fluffballs in tow. I was shooting into the sun for this one. I have another of the same brood taken in the shade. I may post that one later, but it could be a while. The light was kind to me on...

There were some Mute Swans at Lintrathen too, but I didn't see any youngsters with them. A shame they didn't come a bit closer to the hide though.

    Winter Visitors

Found this group of Mute Swans on a patch of still open water on local reservoir during snowstorm yesterday. I believe it is 2 adults and 4 juvis. We seem to get here in the winter if there is any open water around.

  22. More flightly swans

    More flightly swans

This was another group of swans that took flight (fright?) that day and the closer image I promised if you were good;) The light really wasn't that great that day, so it's not the best of images. I'm just amazed that I got so many flight shots that are id-able!!
  23. The Armarda

    The Armarda

I got some pictures of single swans closer, but preferred this more distant image with the habitat. Unfortunately that isn't a beaver swimming with them, though they are about there.... it's an unidentified duck! And I'm not giving any prizes to the one who can ID it ;)
