    There were also some Red-breasted Mergansers resting on the rocks. Not every day I see these, though it probably would be if I lived further out the fjord, or even spent more time at the fjord shore this far inland.

    No, this bird is not dead. It is a Red-breasted Merganser swimming very actively with its head just in or below the surface of the water. It did that for quite a while.
