  1. California Quail male

    California Quail male

Daily visitors to our gardens, there is always one male that sits higher to watch over the family.
  2. Last of the mesh fence shots

Last of the mesh fence shots

My glasses fell off while I was taking these shots. I didn't notice until later when I got to the local book store and reached for them. I walked back where I'd been, but didn't find them. Luckily I had spares. Then two days later I walked there again ... and found them :D lying in some tall...
  3. Through a mesh fence - 3

    Through a mesh fence - 3

Next-to-last one of the quail on the far side of that darned mesh fence.
  4. through a mesh fence 2

    through a mesh fence 2

Another of the quail on the far side of the fence. I didn't get into the caf today, so still on the glacially slow WiFi, and now I'm falling asleep at the keyboard - probably a result of having ridden my little travel bike from Glen Ellen to Sonoma and back (16 miles), plus some walking about...
  5. California Quail (2)

    California Quail (2)

I have not gone mad!! If you look at yesterdays Quail photograph you will see a sheep dropping at the tail end of the bird. It annoyed me, so I removed it in Photoshop Elements and I think this photo looks a bit better. That is the power of this package.
  6. Male California Quail

    Male California Quail

Not an easy photograph to take because of the grass stalks, a bit of Photoshop Elements I was able to put it right.
  7. California Quail

    California Quail

Testing the large Tamron lens with the Canon 7D behind it. I think the 7D is handling the lens a bit better than the 60D, judging from this photo.

  9. Family Protection

    Family Protection

The threat of hawk attacks seems to be every day and the quail are quick to rush to the safety of brush and family. If one runs, they all run. In this case the the two females ran to the male for protection. I was surprised these birds stayed out in the open next to the brush.
  10. California Quail (Male & Female)

    California Quail (Male & Female)

As every one knows, these are a common bird in my yard. I feed them every day: twice a day. There is abundant water, as well. So, I sit on a stool, with some coffee, fruit and cheese, and my rig and wait. The waits are never long. Because they are habituated to my yard they are a little less...
  11. Family Group (composite)

    Family Group (composite)

This is a composite. The juvenile bird was added from a separate image. The intent is to provide a pictorial representation of what the plumage looks like in the young birds. Note the absence of the scale-like feathers in chest, flank and neck area; note the cryptic patterns of the wing...
  12. Mr Quail sr. and jr.

    Mr Quail sr. and jr.

California quail heading for cover after crossing Muddy Hollow Trail. And that's almost it for that day's birding. I did see other birds, and heard some not seen (such as wren tit, which is often heard and seldom seen). I got a few nice shots of white-crowned sparrows that I haven't edited yet...
  13. California Quail juv.

    California Quail juv.

Youngsters of all sizes can be seen in our gardens now. This one easily walked through the chain link fence when our dogs walked out the door.
  14. Look both ways

    Look both ways

Sorry :( Didn't get any browsing done today, and now I'm exhausted from the heat (106F) and from sorting through artwork, furniture and jewelry. Tomorrow is clothing, photos and books. Wednesday is the kitchen. Thursday we visit my aunt, and husband flies home. Friday daughter and son-in-law...
  15. Fluffed quail

    Fluffed quail

Yesterday's memorial went well. And happily it wasn't such a hot day as today (I think about 40C now). Today we're writing thank you notes, and turning leftovers into a stir-fry. Sibling cooperation is running smoothly and lovingly. On the down side, my camera has run out of battery. I forgot to...
  16. House finch on the wire

    House finch on the wire

Ha! Fooled ya ;) But yes, I do think that was a house finch on the wire. And that's Himalayan blackberry blooming along the fence. But of course the star of the show is the California Quail, the one on guard duty, like some town crier calling out the "all's well" to the flock down...

  18. California Quail

    California Quail

Mom and dad brought their four little ones to their favorite spot in our neighbor's garden for their dust baths. The parents love to dig deep holes by the drip hose and then just enjoy the cool damp dirt. Most times one parent will stand close by to watch for danger to the family but sometimes...
  19. California Quail

    California Quail

This bird was introduced to Hawai in 1860i as a game bird. It is usually found in the mountains near the Saddle Road on Hawaii Island.
  20. California Quail

    California Quail

A year round visitor to our gardens, this male was keeping a close eye on his nearby mate.
  21. California Quail (Male)

    California Quail (Male)

The males are in fine plumage, as it is the mating season. By late April to Mid-May the nidus should be ready. However, due to the extreme drought there may not be as many clutches this year. The reason is that for the first month, or so, chicks need a source of protein; that means insects. The...

  23. California Quail (Male)

    California Quail (Male)

This is behavior that the males exhibit this time of year. The males will take a position on a tall object, and then give these single note calls. Usually it's early in the morning. It is their way of advertising availability, and territory. This may not be a good year for quail broods. The...

    California Quail (Male)

    I like the fence post.
  25. California Quail

    California Quail

This male was taking a break from filling up on corn scratch we provide.
