Spotted Eagle-Owl
took the camera to lunch at a friend's today; she has had a pair of these spectacular owls nesting in her big trees for several years. They are now oblivious to people, dogs etc so no trouble getting close. This is the male; the female is about a third bigger.- max1

One of a pair. Its appearance and habits are similar to the familiar Great Horned Owl of North America. This widespread, fairly common owl occurs in two color morphs. Spotted Eagle Owl younglings getting to sleep
A trio of young Spotted Eagle Owls is preparing for a good day's sleep in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, about 15 km south from Mata Mata rest camp. I'm not a big fan on using flashes on nocturnal birds, I've read several studies saying that it isn't damaging to them, but rather err on the side of caution.
