on our early morning walk on the golf course we saw these two in the oaks near the 17th tee; in grave danger from one of my infamous shanks...a parent was in the next tree keeping watch. What a treat.

took the camera to lunch at a friend's today; she has had a pair of these spectacular owls nesting in her big trees for several years. They are now oblivious to people, dogs etc so no trouble getting close. This is the male; the female is about a third bigger.

This bird was sitting a few feet away from a regularly used path in the Botanic Gardens, seemingly indifferent to the passers-by!

    Spotted Eagle-Owl

One of a pair. Its appearance and habits are similar to the familiar Great Horned Owl of North America. This widespread, fairly common owl occurs in two color morphs. This is a gray morph, but a chestnut-brown morph with orange eyes also occurs. Two (Howard & Moore) or three (Clements, HBW)...

A trio of young Spotted Eagle Owls is preparing for a good day's sleep in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, about 15 km south from Mata Mata rest camp. The following morning saw the three again on the same perch, although in a slightly different arrangement. There seems to be a habit here :) Thanks...

These are last year's brood of owls at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town. After years of raising youngsters behind a rock next to a path, the parents have laid this year's clutch in a flower basket on top of a pillar in the entrance courtyard (much harder to get a full view). They...

    Spotted Eagle Owls

The Spotted Eagle Owls at Kirstenbosch seem to be quite an attraction. There was a sign inviting visitors to spot them. There was an adult roosting in a tree and nearby, just off a footpath, were these two juveniles, attracting a lot of attention from visitors who, fortunately, were keeping a...

I'm not a big fan on using flashes on nocturnal birds, I've read several studies saying that it isn't damaging to them, but rather err on the side of caution. To get this I heavily defused the flash, cranked the ISO up to 3200 and used the lowest setting to get the bird visible; though would...
