the heron story 6 - I meant to do that! (... to be continued)

Then I caught the heron repeatedly dunking the rodent in the water, so definitely on purpose, but what purpose? To clean it? To drown it into submission? To kill it? To wash it? To make it more slippery and easier to swallow? Just for fun? To reposition it for swallowing? Again ... hard to say...

Next frame, the heron seems to have dropped the vole. Accidentally? On purpose? Hard to say which.

the heron story (3) ... to be continued.

We walked around Mallard Lake, seeing no Mallards, only turtles and various plants, until we got back opposite our parked car. That's where we again spotted the heron. S/he was standing in the water by the near edge of the lake, holding a field mouse or vole s/he had caught. To be continued...

... the heron story (2), closer and closer

We nevertheless took the route we'd planned, walking closer and closer to the heron. Another walker coming the opposite way skirted into the street to avoid the bird. Still the bird just stood there. We got this close before s/he flew.

Great Blue Heron Great Blue Herons appear blue-gray from a distance, with a wide black stripe over the eye. In flight, the upper side of the wing is two-toned: pale on the forewing and darker on the flight feathers. A pure white subspecies occurs in coastal southern Florida.

Great Blue Heron The great blue heron is the largest heron species in North America, standing about 4 feet tall. But even though they are large birds, they don't weigh much (only 5 to 6 pounds), thanks to their light, hollow bones (a trait most birds have).

    Great Blue Heron

Standing motionless on a branch over our backyard creek, this stately heron posed on its favorite perch. This is an adult showing a white stripe down the middle of its crown. Notice the long, loose feathers on its chest. These specialized feathers continually grow and fray forming “powder down”...
