Have Waxwings ever bred in the UK?

Have Waxwings ever bred in the UK? I am currently writing up a Breeding Bird Survey Report which I carried out in the north of Scotland this year, on which I came across a Waxwing in mid May. Although the likelihood of it being a breeding bird is remote, it got me thinking, has Waxwing ever...

    is this a corn bunting?

Corn Bunting's call is also a dead giveaway. It's often compared to a set of keys being jangled. Cheers Andy j

    Iridescent Spanish Bird

Sounds like a Glossy Starling to me. Think there are various species of Glossy Starling, but your description seems to fit Purple Glossy Starling. By no means an expert on these species though! Seem to remember an escape Purple Glossy Starling at Landguard a few years back? Cheers Andy J

    The quirks of listing

I have heard of someone turning up at Cley a few years after the Little Whimbrel in 1985(?) and asking if the birds in the Eye Field were Whimbrels. When he was told they were, he replied "oh good, that's the second species of Whimbrel I have seen in Britain" Andy J

    best pair in one binsview

A couple of trios for me - the three Redpolls at Titchwell were a nice comparison. Best for me was Black Duck, Pec Sand and Buff breasted Sand at Stithians a few years back. Found the Buff breasted whilst watching the Black Duck, then a Pec Sand dropped out of the sky next to them! Andy J

What bird are you most proud of having in your garden?

At my old house in Essex, pride of place went to a cracking Firecrest which visited for a day one April. Mealy Redpoll in the invasion year, fly over Hobby and Kingfisher get honourable mentions. In Elgin the pair of overwintering Blackcaps were nice, and fiercely defended from the local cats...

    Possible Hybrid?

It looks very much like a zoo or collection of some sort, as the Avocets are all ringed too. They are not BTO style rings either. Maybe the slides got mixed up?! Andy J

    Possible Hybrid?

Where was the photo taken? I vaguely recall them being at London Zoo, but that's going back some!! Andy J

What was your favourite bird to see?

The 1300+ Waxwings in Forres, Moray in autumn 2004 is hard to beat for me in terms of shear spectacle value! Species wise, you can't beat Pallas's Warblers or Firecrests in my eyes - little gems i'll never tire of seeing. For the shear distance travelled, Pallas's just shade it for me though Andy J
