Identification

19–22 cm

  • Green overall plumage
  • Mauve forehead
  • Broad yellow breast band
  • Yellow vent and under-tail coverts

Distribution

Southeast Asia: found in Indonesia, Papuan Islands
Australasia: Papua New Guinea, Timor Island, Melanesia, Solomon Islands

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 9 subspecies[1]:

  • P. s. speciosus: Numfor, Biak and Yapen islands
  • P. s. johannis: Admiralty Islands, St. Matthias Group and New Hanover
  • P. s. meyeri: New Britain and satellite islands
  • P. s. neumanni: Nissan Island (west Solomon Islands)
  • P. s. bistictus: Solomon Islands (Bougainville and Buka)
  • P. s. vulcanorum: South-western Solomon Islands
  • P. s. ocularis: Guadalcanal (south-eastern Solomon Islands)
  • P. s. ambiguus: Malaita Island (eastern Solomon Islands)
  • P. s. solomonensis: Solomon Islands (Makira and Ugi)

Habitat

Moist lowland forests on smaller outlier islands.

Behaviour

Basically frugivorous. but little detail is known.
