Identification

Male: Glossy blue-black upperparts, peach-coloured underparts, bold white wing panel, narrow black bill, black legs, shortish tail with white outer rectrices.
Female: similar but duller.
Similar species
Separated from Violet-backed Hyliota Hyliota violacea by white wing panel and white, rather than black, underwing coverts.

Africa
Western Africa: Senegambia, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola
Eastern Africa: South Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi
Southern Africa: occurs only in Namibia
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- H. f. flavigaster:
- Senegambia to Sierra Leone, east to South Sudan, western Ethiopia, Uganda, and western Kenya
- H. f. barbozae:
- Lake Victoria to Angola, Zambia, Malawi and northern Mozambique
Habitat
Moist savanna with medium or large sized trees and open woodland.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of a variety of insects and their eggs and includes beetles.
