Western Africa: Senegambia, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola
Eastern Africa: occurs only in Zambia
Taxonomy
This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 3 subspecies.
Formerly placed in genus Francolinus.

- Eastern Ivory Coast to Cameroon
- C. a. dewittei:
An additional subspecies meinertzhageni, is generally considered invalid[2]

Open areas with scattered trees, areas where farming has been a past use

Breeding
A next with a small amount of hollowing and lined with plant material with approximately a half dozen brownish-yellow eggs with brown specks.
Thought to be monogamous.
