Identification
Head, upper breast and tail dark red; remainder of body and wings black with well-defined white spots in adult male and narrow cinnamon bars in adult female.

Senegambia to central Africa
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies[1]:
- S. p. pulchra - Gambia to northern Cameroon
- S. p. zenkeri - Extreme southeast Nigeria, coastal Cameroon and north Gabon
- S. p. batesi - South Cameroon
- S. p. centralis - Congo to south Sudan, west Kenya, northwest Tanzania and north Angola
Habitat
Rainforests.
Behaviour
An extremely secretive and shy bird which moves amongst the undergrowth very quickly.
