Identification
8 cm (3 in).
- Grey to dark grey crown
- White supercilium which meet over the bill, faint white eyering, greyish rest of face
- Greyish-olive upperparts
- Dusky wings with two white wing-bars which are formed by spots
- Dusky tail
- White throat, grading into pale olive-yellow on breast
- Pure pale yellow belly
Sexes similar, females are slightly smaller. Juveniles are duller.
Distribution
East and southeast Colombia, south and southeast Venezuela and the Guianas south to east Ecuador, east Peru, north Bolivia and north, west and central Brazil (Amazonia east to east Pará and northwest Maranhão). Also an isolated population at the coast in east Brazil (Alagoas south to Rio de Janeiro).
Uncommon to locally common, often overlooked.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and swamps, also mature second growth. In the foothills often at edges and openings like treefalls or landslides.
Occurs from sea-level up to 1000 m, locally up to 1200 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on arthropods.
Usually seen singly or in pairs, sometimes in mixed-species flocks.
Forages actively, flitting from perch to perch in dense foliage, usually in the forest canopy, sometimes lower down along edges. Behaviour reminds of a parulid warbler or a vireo.
Breeding
Juveniles and birds with enlarged gonads recorded in December in Peru. No other information.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
