Asia: found in Russia, Siberia, Turkestan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, Tibet, Korea (North & South) and Japan.

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies^[1]:

C. s. sibiricus:

Southern Siberia to northern Mongolia and northern Manchuria; winters to Turkestan

C. s. ussuriensis:

Central Manchuria to Northern Korea; winters to north-eastern China and South Korea

C. s. sanguinolentus:

Sakhalin, southern Kuril Islands and Hokkaido; winters to southern Japanese islands

C. s. lepidus:

Western China (south-eastern Gansu and southern Shaanxi)

C. s. henrici:

Mountains of western China (south-eastern Tibet to western Sichuan and northern Yunnan)

Formerly included in genus Uragus.
