Identification
17 - 18.5cm
Male:
- Black head, chin, throat and upper breast
- Yellow collar on hindneck connected with yellow underparts
- Yellowish-olive upperparts
- Blackish-brown tail
- Black bill
Female:
- Olive-grey crown
- Yellowish-olive hindneck collar
- White upper throat
Similar species
Similar to the Golden Whistler in appearance, but note black chin and throat.
Distribution
Vava'u Islands Group in North Tonga.
Common in parts of its very small range.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Has been treated as a subspecies of Golden Whistler.
Habitat
Understory of primary forests, although it is found in secondary forest with large trees.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects, takes sometimes small lizards. Mainly foraging in the undergrowth.
Breeding season from July to September. The nest is a cup made of twigs and rootlets. It's placed 4 - 5m above the ground. Lays 2 eggs.
