Male
- White throat
- Medium broad black breast band
- Bright yellow underparts
- Black upperparts with olive mantle
- Broad fringes on wings
Female
- Gray cap
- Brown olive mantle
- Olive rump and tail
- Mottled off-white throat
- Brownish breast band
- Yellow underparts
Juvenile has more rufous head and sometimes yellow on throat
Distribution
Endemic to Vanikoro, Utupua, Nendo, Reef and Duff Islands. Solomon Islands
Taxonomy
Previously listed with scientific name P. utupuae. Formerly included in Golden Whistler, and (in part) Vanuatu Whistler and Melanesian Whistler.
Subspecies
Clements recognizes three subspecies[1]:
- P. v. ornata: Northern Santa Cruz Islands (Nendo, Reef Islands, and Duff Islands)
- P. v. utupuae: Central Santa Cruz Islands (Utupua Island)
- P. v. vanikorensis: Southern Santa Cruz Islands (Vanikoro)
Habitat
Forests, including degraded forests on small islands.
Behaviour
Male is often solitary, female often with juvenile. Forages in all forest stories.
