Areas of Interest
The North part of Te Urewera is very unspoiled with few visitors. In this part is the biggest North Island Kokako population in New Zealand. But You need a fine morning ( good is between 7 - 8 am ) in the mountains. Best start at 5 am in the valley.
Access and Facilities
To very nice camping place on lake Waikaramona is 90 km gravel road ( driving speed 30 - 40 km/h). So lot of people do not like to drive this road. Near the camping place is a big national parc centre. From Rotorua is a street to information centre. From there is another 30 minutes to Whirinaki forest. Very nice forest with lot of the Kahikatea, the tallest tree of New Zealand ( 65 meters ).
