Identification

48–55 cm

  • Orange-rufous facial disc
  • Buff underparts with heavy dark streaks
  • Prominent ear tufts
  • Yellow eyes

Distribution

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Laos, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Nepal, China, and Taiwan, to Myanmar and south-east Asia.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

It has previously been assigned to the genus Bubo.

Habitat

Temperate forests, wooded ravines, banks of streams and pools in broad-leafed forests.

Behaviour

The diet consists mostly of fish and shellfish; supplemented with small rodents such as mice, moles,voles and rats. Also lizards, beetles and fairly large birds like partridge are also taken.
