Endemic to Southeast Asia: found in Island of Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java


Subspecies sumatranus may be elevated as "Sumatran Bulbul". In this case virescens may be called "Javan Bulbul".


Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:

  • I. v. sumatranus: "Sumatran Bulbul". Western Sumatra
  • I. v. virescens: "Javan Bulbul". Java
