United States, Connecticut

Overview

Stratford is a town in southern Connecticut, on the eastern side of Fairfield County. It is very productive for birding, especially during the winter. There are many different birding spots in the area. Stratford Point, while being closed on weekends, is home to many sea ducks. Many of these ducks can also be seen at Long Beach, which is very productive through the winter season. Other spots, such as Short Beach Park, Lordship Seawall and Birdseye Boat Ramp make Stratford a very birdy town.

Birds

Notable Species

As a whole, almost 300 species have been seen in Stratford. Birdseye Boat Ramp is the only spot in Stratford to see American Coot, as well as having large amounts of Gadwall. You can also see American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser and Northern Harrier. Long Beach and Stratford Point are very similar; both spots are the easiest spot in Connecticut to find Long-tailed Duck. Along with that, Greater Scaup can be seen there. Fairly large numbers of scoters are also seen at Stratford Point, from all three species. Great Cormorant can be seen at Short Beach and Stratford Point. During the summer Stratford is not productive, but Stratford Point can yield fairly large numbers of terns and sandpipers.

Rarities

In 2015, Eurasian Wigeon has been seen in multiple locations. Birds have been found at Lordship Seawall and Birdseye Boat Ramp. Iceland Gulls have been spotted at Long Beach in 2014 and 2015; a long-staying bird in 2014 continued for months. Other rare ducks are always a possibility during the winter here.
