Identification

With 14 - 15 cm the only Yuhina on Borneo:

  • Crown and nape rufous
  • Olive-grey upperparts
  • Grey-brown upperwing and tail (with broad white tips on outher feather)
  • White lores and supercilium
  • White underparts

Similar Species

Similar to nominate subspecies of Striated Yuhina, but no range overlap.

Distribution

Endemic to Borneo. Common in Sabah, eg around Mount Kinabalu the commonest flocking bird. Also present in Kutai and Kayan Mentarang National Parks and Gunung Palung National Park and Gunung Niut Nature Reserve.1

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[2].

Sometimes treated conspecific with Striated Yuhina. Also placed in the genus Staphida.1

Habitat

Submontane and montane broadleaf evergreen forest, between 100 and 2800m.1

Behaviour

Feeds on insects, takes also seeds, berries and fruit, sometimes nectar.
Usually seen in fast-moving noisy groups of 6 - 12 or more birds, sometimes mixing with other species.
Breeding season from November to August, maybe a co-operative breeder. The nest is a cup of moss, placed about 0.5 above the ground in a moss-covered trailbank, riverbank or another suitable place. Lays 1 - 6 eggs. The nest is often parasitized by Cuckoos, eg. Moustached Hawk-Cuckoo.
