Identification
13–16 cm (5-6¼ in)
Long legs, short tail, rounded wings.
Male
- Black overall plumage
- Black-tipped white primaries
- Broad pale lemon eye ring around pale eye
Female heavily streaked, rufous on wings and pale eyes
South America: found in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. Vagrant to Peru.
Northern part of range only as winter visitor, southern part only in breeding season.

Habitat
Marshes, swamps and reed-edged waterbodies to wet shrubland. Sometimes uses cultivated land next to such areas.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds mostly on the ground; their main diet consisting of insects and spiders.
Breeding
Males in breeding season may be conspicuous; their display consisting of a spectacular rise to about 10 m, with a loud snap of the bill.
