Identification

Length: 50 cm

  • Long-billed
  • Short-legged
  • Tailless
  • Wingless
  • Dark greyish-brown
  • Heavily streaked with reddish-brown and black
  • Greyer on head
  • Bill whitish to pinkish
  • Legs pale brownish

Females are larger and longer-billed.

Distribution

North Island of New Zealand.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
It has long been considered conspecific with Southern Brown Kiwi and Okarito Brown Kiwi.

Habitat

Native forests. Also in shrublands, plantations, scrub and farmland.

Behaviour

Mainly a nocturnal species.

Breeding

Nests in burrows and natural cavities. Lays 1 to 3 eggs.

Diet

Worms and insect larvae, fallen fruit.
