Identification
11-14 cm.
- Black head and neck, continuing to lower breast
- White postocular tuft
- Rich chestnut-brown upperparts
- Grey flanks
- White belly patch
- Black bill, lower mandible flesh-coloured
Females have rufous crown, paler rufous ear-coverts and grey underparts, except for white throat and white belly patch.
Juvenile undescribed.
Distribution
South America: found in north-eastern Brazil (eastern Pará to western Ceará and southern Piauí).
Fairly common in parts of its range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Closely related to Rufous Gnateater.
Habitat
In thickets at edge of humid rainforest (western end of range) to edge of more seasonally xeric tall woodland in eastern part of range.
Occurs in lowlands.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on small arthropods. Takes food from foliage and leaf litter near or on the ground.
Breeding
Not much information. One recorded nest was almost complet in mid-April.
