Identification
Male 47-51cm
- Glossy purple-blue black
- Grey neck
- White streaks above and on sides of breast
- Red facial skin around eye
- Chestnut rump, offset by glossy blue-black tail coverts
- Short, buffy tail
Female 42-44cm
- Glossy blackish
- Brownish tint on head and tail
- No pale streaking
- Red facial skin around eye
Distribution
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
This was formerly considered conspecific with Malayan Crestless Fireback.
Habitat
Lowland forests with a requirement for mature forest or regrowth and a preference for humid areas. Found up to 500 m asl.
Behaviour
Mostly seek food in groups of 1-2 but larger groups occasionally observed. Food items taken include both invertebrates and berries, fruits, leaves and seeds.
Vocalisation
Quiet contact sounds sometimes heard, but giving a loud Kak when in alarm.
