Selsey Bill-26th October 05

It's dawn on my birthday, and I'm sitting in my car watching the sun brighten the eastern sky. The public car park at Selsey Bill is perfect for sea-watching and although I suppose I should be standing outside looking the part, it's far too comfortable in the motor with a cup of tea in hand. It's completely different weather from yesterday. A slight breeze with just a chill in it but, wow what a beautiful blue sky. I've not even looked through my bins yet. On the shingle at the edge of the car park I count 20 Turnstone going about their business. As the early morning dog walkers drift by I watch to see if they notice the birds near their feet but they seem oblivious. By the time the suns up I've seen Cormorant speeding past in the direction of Pagham and countless Black-headed Gull who don't seem to be in such a rush and gently drift past like the pensioners out to get their early newspapers. Just as I'm about to pack it in and go back to open my presents, I get a surprise. From above the houses behind the car park come 2 Swallows. They drop very low over the sea and I watch them head out until their tiny dots. Is that late for Swallows to be leaving? I've spent hours watching House Martin and Swallow from my back garden in the summer but to actually see them heading out over the sea towards France was something else. Such little birds...such a big sea!
