Identification

Medium sized Screech-Owl
Found in reddish or greyish brown morphs. This species is relatively weakly patterned with shaft streaks that are narrow and barring that is relatively indistinct. The ear-tufts are relatively small.

Similar species

Tropical Screech-Owl is the only congener known to occur in the same area. It is a bird of lower elevation and of drier habitat, and in addition it is more boldly patterned with a different voice.

Distribution

Santa Marta mountains, northern Colombia.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Humid forests at elevations of 1800-2500 m asl.

Behaviour

Behavior is relatively unknown but assumed similar to other members of its genus Megascops.

Vocalisation

A trill that consists of about 10 elements per second and lasts for about 2.4 seconds.
