Identification

12–13 cm (4¾-5 in)

  • Rufous-brown upperparts and throat
  • Black breast and mid-belly surrounded by white
  • White supercilium

Female: white underparts with conspicuous dark streaks on the throat and breast

Distribution

South America: found in Suriname, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay

Subspecies

  • F. r. urubambae:
  • Locally in foothills of eastern Peru (San Martín and Cusco)
  • F. r. chapmani:
  • F. r. rufa

Habitat

They can be found in a variety of habitats, including cerrado brushland. Observed in xerophytic scrub at around 270 m.

There is little information available. They feed on a variety of insects and are likely to include spiders too.
