Distribution

Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay.

Taxonomy

This species was in the past placed in genus Poospiza.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized^[1].

• M. t. torquatus

• Arid intermontane valleys of northwestern Bolivia

• M. t. pectoralis

• Lowlands of southeast Bolivia to western Paraguay and central Argentina

Habitat

Dry forests and shrubland.
