Identification
15–17 cm (6-6¾ in)
- Green overall plumage
- Yellowish-green forehead and front of crown
- Red lores, cheeks, chin and sides of breast
- Violet ear-coverts and rump
- Green tail with red to yellow tips
- Orange eyes with a black iris
- Pinkish-red legs
- Reddish to pink bill reddish
Female basically a slightly duller green without the red cheeks, chin and flanks. Ear coverts black with yellow streaks. Immatures like the female, with males having greenish yellow forehead and a pale yellow Iris.
Distribution
Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
Taxonomy
This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 5 subspecies.
Subspecies
- H. p. intensior:
- Northern Moluccas and Gebe Island (west Papuan islands)
- H. p. placentis:
- Southern Moluccas, Aru islands and southern New Guinea
- H. p. ornata:
- Western Papuan islands and north-western New Guinea
- H. p. subplacens:
- Eastern New Guinea
- H. p. pallidior:
- Bismarck Archipelago and Solomon Islands (Bougainville and Fead)
Habitat
Forested areas such as savanna woodland and tall secondary growth, but they particularly make use of mangrove forests.
Behaviour
Breeding
The clutch consists of 2 eggs with both sexes sharing the incubation which lasts from 21 to 23 days. Chicks leave the nest a further 5-6 weeks later.
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of flowers, the nectar and pollen.
