Hypocharmosyna placentis

Charmosyna placentis


15–17 cm (6-6¾ in)

  • Green overall plumage
  • Yellowish-green forehead and front of crown
  • Red lores, cheeks, chin and sides of breast
  • Violet ear-coverts and rump
  • Green tail with red to yellow tips
  • Orange eyes with a black iris
  • Pinkish-red legs
  • Reddish to pink bill reddish

Female basically a slightly duller green without the red cheeks, chin and flanks. Ear coverts black with yellow streaks. Immatures like the female, with males having greenish yellow forehead and a pale yellow Iris.


Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.


This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 5 subspecies.

  • Northern Moluccas and Gebe Island (west Papuan islands)
  • H. p. placentis:
  • Southern Moluccas, Aru islands and southern New Guinea
  • H. p. ornata:
  • Western Papuan islands and north-western New Guinea
  • H. p. subplacens:
  • Eastern New Guinea
  • H. p. pallidior:


Forested areas such as savanna woodland and tall secondary growth, but they particularly make use of mangrove forests.



The clutch consists of 2 eggs with both sexes sharing the incubation which lasts from 21 to 23 days. Chicks leave the nest a further 5-6 weeks later.


Their diet consists mostly of flowers, the nectar and pollen.
