Identification
16.5-17 cm. A very distinctive species.
Male
- Tawny-buff to rufous lowermost forehead, cheek and supercilium
- Dark greyish-green above, rufous-brown wings and tail
- Red crescent-shaped band across chest, becoming tawny on neck side
- Grey rest of underparts, ochre undertail-coverts
- Orange-red eye
- Red bill and legs
- kathleenae with more yellow on forehead
Female
- Duller upperparts
- Yellowish-white underparts with blackish streaks
- kathleenae with blacker stripes
- Yellowish eyes
- Duller bill and legs
Juveniles are conspicuously spotted on upperparts.
Distribution
Southern Venezuela, Guyana and adjacent northern Brazil.
A rare to uncommon restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies recognized:
- P. w. kathleenae in the Tepuis of southern Venezuela (southeast Bolívar)
- P. w. whitelyi in the Tepuis of western Guyana (Mount Twek-quay) and adjacent northern Brazil (Roraima)
Habitat
Subtropical or tropical moist montanes.
Occurs from 1300 to 2250 m.
Behaviour
Feeds probably only on fruit. Joins sometimes mixed-species flocks.
No information about breeding or movements.
