Purple Swamphen may refer to one of six species previously considered conspecific under the name Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio):
- Western Swamphen - Porphyrio porphyrio
- African Swamphen - Porphyrio madagascariensis
- Grey-headed Swamphen - Porphyrio poliocephalus
- Black-backed Swamphen - Porphyrio indicus
- Australasian Swamphen - Porphyrio melanotus
- Philippine Swamphen - Porphyrio pulverulentus
Note that many birds in Indonesia (at least) show a mix of plumage characters. Mitochondrial DNA lineages do not cluster with the divisions above. These are arguments for maintaining a single polytypic species [1].
