Identification
29-30 cm. The only trogon in the Philippines.
Male
- Yellow bill with bright green base
- Black head and throat with violet-blue facial skin, crown suffused maroon
- Pale brown neck and mantle, lighter rump
- Rufous tail with blackish terminal band
- Greyish-pink breast with bright red breastline, pinkish-red rest of underparts
Female
- Duller than male
- Brownish-black head and throat
- Orange-brown breast and belly
- Rich brown barring on wingpanel
Juveniles similar to females but with coarse barring on wingpanel
Distribution
Endemic to the Philippines.
Locally common in its range. The subspecies minor seems to survive only at Sibulan in southern Polillo and is presumably highly threatened.
Taxonomy
Five subspecies recognized:
- H. a. herberti in northern Philippines (northeast Luzon and Marinduque)
- H. a. luzoniensis in northern Philippines (south and central Luzon)
- H. a. minor on Polillo Island (north Philippines)
- H. a. linae in central Philippines (Bohol, Leyte and Samar)
- H. a. ardens in south Philippines (Basilan, Dinagat and Mindanao)
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and montanes.
Occurs mainly between 200 and 600 m, but recorded up to 1670 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Seen feeding on grasshoppers and stick-insects.
Breeding
Breeding season from March to June. The nest is placed in a tree hole. Lays 3 eggs.
Movements
A resident species, probably with some altitudinal movements.
