Identification

This small woodpecker is found creeping up the sides of trees.

Distribution

Philippines

Taxonomy

Three subspecies recognized:

  • Y. m. validirostris on Catanduanes, Lubang, Luzon, Marinduque, Mindoro
  • Y. m maculatus on Sibuyan, Cebu, Guimaras, Negros, Panay and Gigantes
  • Y. m fulvifasciatus on Samar, Calicoan, Leyte, Bohol, Basilan, Mindanao and Dinagat

Sulu Pygmy Woodpecker was formerly considered conspecific.

Habitat

Forests and mixed cultivation.

Behaviour

They are found singly, in pairs or joining mixed species flocks. Call is a loud, stuttering trill lasting about 2.3 seconds, slightly descending and repeated irregularly. Also gives a single note, and drums while foraging.
