Four subspecies recognized[1]:
- M. t. phaea on Batan and Calayan (Philippines) and Taiwan
- M. t. septentrionalis on Batan, Itbayat and Sabtan Islands (northern Philippines); Lanyu Island
- M. t. tenuirostris in the Philippines
- M. t. borneensis in northern Borneo
