Adult male: Black with a large yellow gape.

Adult female: Greenish head, back yellow with blackish bars, wing coverts black with yellow edging. Below underparts with barring on the breast.

Similar Species

Black Cuckoo-shrike male has smaller yellow gape; female is less yellow.

Distribution

Western and Eastern Africa
South-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon to north-western Angola; also north-eastern Zaire, western Uganda and western Kenya

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Woodland, mangroves, forest and forest edge.

Behaviour

Vocalisation

A soft whistle; seldom heard.
