Peacock Coquette - BirdForum Opus

Lophornis pavoninus

Identification

c. 9.7 cm.

Male

  • Short straight black bill
  • Glittering golden green head with median black line
  • Shining dark green upperparts with white band across rump
  • Black throat
  • Broad cheek tufts, shining green with large blackish-blue spots at distal end, proximally rufous with white spot
  • Greyish-green rest of underparts
  • Purplish-bronzy, slightly forked tail
  • duidae with narrow black median line on crown, rufous at base of cheek-fans reduced, lacks white

Female

  • No tufts
  • Golden bronzy upperparts with buffy white band across rump
  • White throat with black streaks, lateral feathers elongated, black and white
  • Mottled black rest of underparts, white and green
  • Greyish tail with broad purplish-bronzy subterminal bar, outer pair of rectrices tipped whitish

Immatures similar to females.

Distribution

Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela.
A restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies recognized:

  • L. p. pavoninus in the Tepuis of southeastern Venezuela and adjacent north-central Brazil to Guyana (Merumé Mountains)
  • L. p. duidae in the Tepuis of southeastern Venezuela (Mt. Duida) and adjacent smaller tepuis

Sister species of Festive Coquette and Butterfly Coquette.

Habitat

Moist montanes, cloudforest, forest edge and clearings.
Occurs at 500 to 2000 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on nectar. Takes possibly also some insects.
Forages singly or in small groups in the forest canopy.

Breeding

No inforamtion on breeding season. The nest is cup-shaped and suspendend from a branch, c. 2 m above the gorund. Lays 2 eggs.

Movements

This is a sedentary species.
