Identification

11–12 cm (4¼-4¾ in)

  • Metallic-green head, mantle, back, cheek and throat
  • Greyish-brown rump

Distribution

Tropical Africa, found in:
Western Africa: Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Africa: Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi
African Islands: Gulf of Guinea Islands, Bioko

Taxonomy

This is one of the many Sunbirds that have recently been moved to the genus Cinnyris from the genus Nectarinia.

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • C. r. preussi:
  • C. r. reichenowi:

Habitat

Montane heaths, sometimes descending to sea-level.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of insects, spiders and nectar.

They forage singly and in pairs during the breeding season. Otherwise may be seen in groups or mixed species flocks.
