Identification

14·5 cm (5¾ in)

  • Dark blue overall plumage
  • White cheek patch, nape and on back

Distribution

South America: found in Peru and Bolivia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]

  • D. m. unicincta:
  • Andes of northern Peru (Amazonas south to central Huánuco)
  • D. m. pectoralis:
  • Andes of central Peru (central Huánuco to Junín)
  • D. m. albilinea:
  • Andes of southern Peru (Ayacucho to Puno)
  • D. m. mystacalis:
  • Andes of north-western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and western Santa Cruz)

Habitat

Humid montane woodland and low cloudforest with stunted growth. Elfin forest and woody shrubs.

Behaviour

Diet

They take a lot of insects and also eat some nectar from a wide variety of plants.
