Myiagra galeata

Identification

14 cm. A rather small Myiagra Flycatcher.

Male

  • Dark grey above with dark greenish crown and darker on forehead, lores and ear-coverts
  • White below
  • Dark eye
  • Dark grey bill and legs

Female

  • Like male but with pale rufous wash on throat and breast and brownish tinge on upperparts.

Juveniles are similar to females. buruensis with dark grey crown and forehead, goramensis with littler darker crown.

Distribution

Found on the Moluccas, Indonesia.
A fairly common restricted-range species. Uncommon on Buru.

Taxonomy

Clements [1] recognizes four subspecies:

  • M. g. galeata in the northern Moluccas (Obi, Bacan, Ternate, Halmahera, Bisa, Morotai)
  • M. g. buruensis on Buru (southern Moluccas)
  • M. g. seranensis in the southern Moluccas (Seram, Ambon and Boano)
  • M. g. goramensis on Seram Laut and Kai Islands (Kai Cecil)

However Gill and Donsker [2] and HBW [3] include seranensis in goramensis.

Habitat

Occurs in wooded habitats, often in second growth and coastal scrub.
From sea-level up to 150m, occasionally higher.

Behaviour

Diet

An insectivorous species.
Usually seen in pairs, also in mixed-species flocks. Often forages in the canopy.

Breeding

One pair observed at nest in mid-June on Seram, another one in early October on Halmahera[4]. Both nests were placed on a horizontal limp, from 3m up to 8m. No other information.

Movements

A sedentary species.
