Identification
22–23 cm (8½-9 in)
- Yellowish-white upperparts
- Crimson band across upper back
- Crimson forehead and crown
- Purplish-pink spots forming breast patch
- Purple vent
Female: mostly green upperparts, grey underparts. Crimson forehead patch, yellow vent.
Distribution
Endemic to Polynesia: found in Melanesia, Samoa Islands, Fiji, Tonga
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- P. p. perousii:
- Samoa (Savai'i, Upolu, Tutuila, Ofu and Tau)
- P. p. mariae:
Habitat
They are found in the canopy. Pine plantations on the edge of rainforest.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists entirely of fruit.
Breeding
Their frail twiggy nest is a platform usually placed high in a tree.
